Designers in Tech- Open Source Design Workshop

今年在COSCUP(Conference for Open Source Coders, Users Promoters)將協同國際團隊 Superbloom(以人為本出發幫助設計更具包容性和開放性的國際非營利組織)舉辦Designers in Tech- Open Source Design Workshop工作坊,此工作坊是專門為希望對社會做出正面貢獻的設計師所設計的,我們將邀起您以設計師的姿態,在科技人為主的世界裡舞擺出專屬於你的開源貢獻。

Intro

This year, The Conference for Open Source Coders, Users & Promoters (COSCUP) is hosting Designers in Tech- Open Source Design Workshop with Superbloom.( Their mission is to make design in tech more inclusive and open by prioritizing human-centered design )The workshop is developed for designers who want to make an impact and are curious about contributing in the open source world. The workshop will be ideal for designers driven by the belief that their personal involvement can significantly enhance open source projects. By championing accessibility and embracing inclusivity, we aim to highlight the crucial role of design in open source initiatives. Our goal is to empower designers to enter the open source community, break down barriers and dispel the myth that open source is solely for developers and that coding is the only valuable skill.

Who should join this workshop

In this workshop, we will introduce basic concepts of design to people who contribute code to OSS. This will include design exercises and contributions. Level of experience can range from beginner to expert. You are welcome even if you have never made a design related contribution to OSS before. There are no requirements or skills needed to attend this workshop - any level of interest in OSS can participate.

What will the workshop be like?

The focus of the activities in the workshop will center around 3-4 existing OSS projects: Ceno, a mobile browser that is free from censorship, Session is a messenger that focuses on privacy, Co-Facts a chatbot which is fighting misinformation. During the workshop, we will examine existing issues in these projects on GitHub. Alongside user research provided by our cohosts at Superbloom, we will focus on usability and product design challenges that designers are best at.

Who is leading the workshop?

Eriol Fox: Eriol has been working as a designer for 10+ years starting with for profits and then moving on to NGO's and open-source software organizations. They have worked on complex problems involving sustainable food systems, peace-building and crisis response technology. Eriol currently works at Simply Secure on design, research, open-source and technology projects.

Eriol is a part-time funded PhD researcher at Newcastle University's Open Lab where he researches how designers participate in humanitarian and human rights focused open-source software projects.

Abhishek is a multi-disciplinary product designer with ~10 years of experience in UI/UX, branding, product management and mentoring designers currently working as Senior designer at Superbloom Design. He has been working in the social impact space designing Open source softwares. He aims to make a large scale impact through design by promoting ethical, user-caring design thinking practices. In his free time he cultivates his practice of art through painting.
